I have made a video (on my Youtube Channel) on the two famous paintings representing the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, attributed to Jean-Jacques Le Barbier (and his engraving).
Based on my article published in the art history journal POTESTAS, I combine art history and intellectual history to analyse their iconography, compositions and allegories in various contexts. I argue that there are two versions made at different moments of the French Revolution, which provide two opposite meanings and understandings of those natural rights in terms of political regime and legitimate sovereignty. If you use any of these images in your work with law, legal history, human rights, the history of political thought, philosophy, political theory, make sure you watch this video and/or read the article.
The video is based on the slides I prepared for a presentation at the “Venice Multidisciplinary World Conference on Republics and Republicanism“, 24-26 May 2024.
Feel free to share with anyone who would be interested.
